Body

What a great question, "Do my #parrots bite me?" - After all, they are #Amazons, #Macaws, #Cape_Parrots and more - and they have beaks made for a strong bite!

Yeah, they bite. But we've figured a lot out. As a raport is developed with a parrot, the biting becomes minimal. In other words, as you learn to read their body language, mostly at a subconscious level that works faster than thinking, then you learn to read the signs and you know when you should not proceed!

Two worst biters? My Yellow-naped Amazon, Lorenza, and the African Greys. Man!
Amazons can be one-person birds, which means that, in our case, my Amazon bites me when she's jealous of my relationship with my daughter. So, to teach us a lesson in how to behave, she bites whom ever she can reach, usually me. Ironically, if she's falling off my arm (and it's just she and I) she'd rather fall than hurt me. Yes, we are that bonded!

Choosing a parrot to adopt

I don't see a 'real' difference between dating and choosing a pet. They are both intimate relationships that shape your life. To me, choosing a parrot - a bird that, on average, will live between 20 to 50 years depending on the species- is a significant choice. There are some parrots that are like soul-mates and others that you just won't "click" with.

When you are choosing a parrot, regardless of where you are getting them from, find one that stands out to you - not because of their colors or size. Look to your heart, look to see if there is an affinity between you. When you walk away after having seen several parrots, see which stands out. See which parrot warms or opens your heart.

Sometimes I choose a parrot to rescue it, and I don't worry about whether we will get along because it doesn't matter. At that point, I want to provide a parrot a good life. Othertimes, like with Lorenza, the choice is why we are so bonded. She's my soul-parrot. We love being together and, as long as she's not being jealous, she is so easy, comfortable and enjoyable to be with. Clearly we add quality of life to each other's lives and that is priceless.

Of course, I'm bonded deeply to some of my other parrots too. After all, parrots are my bliss.
