Rachel the Blue and Gold Macaw is molting again so I help her out by opening the pin feathers on her head! Molting is when a bird replaces the feathers on its body with new ones. Pin feathers are the way the new feathers grow out. They form in a protective keratin tube which flakes off once the feather is ready.

Parrots open the pin feathers on their body using their beak. However, they need the help opening the ones on their head. In the wild, they'll usually have a mate or buddy do that for them. In the human household they enjoy having a person rub them open. For smaller birds, just rub between fingers. For larger birds, sometimes it takes some finger nail to scratch them open.
